Edmund Finnis - Youth

This EP for Pentatone features Youth and Lullaby for Emmeline, beautifully evocative music written by Edmund Finnis for Clare after the birth of her second daughter in 2017. Listen here.

Youth is a piano cycle in ten movements, each of which recalls an image, sense of place, significant encounter or moment of vivid perception. Evocative and enchanting, it was inspired by childhood experiences as well as the artworks of Daniel Buren, Helen Frankenthaler and Vilhelm Hammershøi. We close with Lullaby for Emmeline, commissioned by Clare and her husband on the occasion of their second daughter's birth.

Finnis writes "It is a great joy to be able to share this first release of my music for solo piano. Since I was young, the keys of the piano have always been for me a private space in which to think, invent and dream. Many of the sounds and ideas within this collection of short pieces have been in my mind and under my fingers for a long time. They are like memories. I am indebted to my friend Clare Hammond for the artistry, grace and lucidity she brings to this personal music."

The album was released in full on the 2 February 2024 and is available here.
